Metabolite Identification
Common NamePhenylacetyl-CoA
DescriptionPhenylacetyl-CoA belongs to the class of organic compounds known as acyl coas. These are organic compounds containing a coenzyme A substructure linked to an acyl chain. Phenylacetyl-CoA is possibly soluble (in water) and a strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Phenylacetyl-CoA exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. In cattle, phenylacetyl-CoA is involved in the metabolic pathway called the phenylacetate metabolism pathway.

Enzymes

General function:
Involved in glycine N-acyltransferase activity
Specific function:
Mitochondrial acyltransferase which transfers an acyl group to the N-terminus of glycine and glutamine, although much less efficiently. Can conjugate a multitude of substrates to form a variety of N-acylglycines, thereby detoxify xenobiotics, such as benzoic acid or salicylic acid, and endogenous organic acids, such as isovaleric acid.

GLYAT
