Se-adenosylselenomethionine belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 5'-deoxyribonucleosides. These are nucleosides in which the oxygen atom at the 5'position of the ribose moiety has been replaced by another atom. The nucleobases here are limited to purine, pyrimidine, and pyridine derivatives. Se-adenosylselenomethionine is possibly soluble (in water) and a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Se-adenosylselenomethionine exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Se-adenosylselenomethionine participates in a number of enzymatic reactions, within cattle. In particular, Se-adenosylselenomethionine can be converted into se-adenosylselenohomocysteine; which is catalyzed by the enzyme methyltransferase-like protein 6. In addition, Se-adenosylselenomethionine and phosphoric acid can be biosynthesized from selenomethionine; which is mediated by the enzyme S-adenosylmethionine synthase. In cattle, se-adenosylselenomethionine is involved in the metabolic pathway called the selenoamino acid metabolism pathway.
