Metabolite Identification
Common NameMethyl butyrate
DescriptionMethyl butanoate, also known as methyl n-butyrate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty acid methyl esters. Fatty acid methyl esters are compounds containing a fatty acid that is esterified with a methyl group. They have the general structure RC(=O)OR', where R=fatty aliphatic tail or organyl group and R'=methyl group. Methyl butanoate exists as a solid, very hydrophobic, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral molecule. Methyl butanoate exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans. Methyl butanoate has been found to be associated with several diseases known as crohn's disease, diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome; also methyl butanoate has been linked to the inborn metabolic disorders including celiac disease.
